Obinnoha PG Race Sparks Fresh Zoning Debate Ahead of 2026 Poll

Consultations among stakeholders and community leaders are intensifying in Obinnoha Autonomous Community in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State ahead of the proposed President General (PG) election, expected to hold in June 2026.

The anticipated election follows the dissolution of town union executives across communities by the Imo State Government, with fresh elections expected to usher in new leadership structures at the community level.

Obinnoha, one of the notable autonomous communities in Mbaitoli, is made up of three major villages — Umuduru, Umuegenti and Umudurundom — with conversations around zoning, balance and equity already shaping early discussions ahead of the anticipated poll.

Particular attention has been paid to the existing leadership structure within the community. The traditional ruler, Eze Desmond Nnamdi Ali, is from Umuduru village, while the last occupant of the President General office, who served in an acting capacity through appointment rather than election, was from Umuegenti village following approval by the local government council.

As a result, some voices within the community believe the next President General should emerge from Umudurundom in the interest of fairness and rotational balance among the three major villages.

Among the names already being mentioned ahead of the proposed election is Comrade Sabinus Echefu from Umudurundom village. Barrister Lucky Chitachi Anokwuru, who is also being mentioned in ongoing consultations, is from Umuduru village.

Although no official election timetable has been publicly announced at the time of reporting, grassroots engagements and consultations are ongoing across the community as various interests begin to align ahead of the anticipated poll.

With consultations already ongoing, attention is expected to remain on Obinnoha as stakeholders prepare for what could become one of the community’s most closely watched PG elections in recent years.
